Seven-night round trips

Norwegian Breakaway sails most of these, on Sundays from late August into October, once its Bermuda season ends. Jewel of the Seas adds Friday sailings in September and October 2028, and Volendam and Zuiderdam each sail one 7-night round trip in September of each year. The usual shape is a Maine port, Saint John, Halifax and often Sydney, with two days at sea.

Breakaway's trip of 22 October 2028 is the exception on that ship. It ends in Quebec City instead of Boston. The Jewel of the Seas sailings are listed by only one of the two sources we check, and the schedule marks them, so confirm the date with Royal Caribbean before you book.

Holland America's one-way weeks and 14-night round trips

Volendam sails 7 nights from Boston to Montreal in June, July and September, by Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown and Quebec City, with one day at sea. On its June and July dates the same departure is also sold as a 14-night round trip, which carries on from Montreal back to Boston by Quebec City, Charlottetown, Sydney, Halifax and Portland.

Zuiderdam's 7-night one-ways in September and October end in Quebec City instead. Each September one-way is also sold as a 14-night round trip that turns at Quebec City and comes back. If you want Montreal without a flight home, Volendam's 14-night trips are the only way to do it from Boston on this schedule.

In August, Volendam takes a longer way round to Montreal. Its 11-night trip of 21 August 2027 and 10-night trip of 19 August 2028 both call at St. John's, St. Anthony and Corner Brook in Newfoundland on the way to the Saguenay.

Princess one-ways to Quebec City

Caribbean Princess leaves on Tuesdays between late August and late October, on 10-night trips in 2027 and 11-night trips in 2028. It calls at Portland, Saint John, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown and the Saguenay, then spends a day and a night in Quebec City before you leave the ship. The 2028 trips add Cap-aux-Meules or Sept-Iles.

Celebrity's longer round trips

Celebrity Silhouette sails 11-night round trips in September and October 2027, and Celebrity Summit sails 12-night round trips in the same months of 2028. Both reach Quebec City and come back to Boston, with Rockland, Halifax, Sydney and Charlottetown on the way and usually Portland. Most of them stay the night in Quebec City.

Small ships and luxury lines to Montreal

Windstar, Oceania, Azamara, Regent and Seabourn sail one way to Montreal in September and October, on 11 or 12 nights. They call at ports the big ships rarely list, such as Bar Harbor, Gaspé, Havre-Saint-Pierre, Sept-Iles, Baie-Comeau and Trois-Rivieres. Our luxury cruises guide compares them.

Windstar's Star Pride also sells a 25-night version. After Montreal it carries on to Tadoussac, the Saguenay, Cap-aux-Meules, Saint-Pierre in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, St. John's, St. Anthony, Red Bay in Labrador, Bonne Bay, Havre-Saint-Pierre and Quebec City, then finishes back in Montreal.

Which ports do Canada and New England cruises from Boston visit?

Halifax is on every Canada and New England sailing on this schedule. Portland, Sydney and Charlottetown come next, then Saint John and, on the longer trips, Quebec City. Eastport, Rockland, Bar Harbor and the Saguenay turn up less often, so check the ports on the row before you book.

  • Halifax, Nova Scotia. On every sailing in this guide, and on the 2027 Bermuda trips too.
  • Portland, Maine. On most sailings, often the day after Boston or the day before you get back. Cruise Portland Maine, the group that works with the City of Portland to attract cruise lines, says the port now gets about 100 ships a year.
  • Sydney, Nova Scotia. The Port of Sydney publishes a walking map of the waterfront and downtown, and says the sights on it are within walking distance of the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion. The port's shops and vendors are by the Big Fiddle on the waterfront.
  • Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The Charlottetown Harbour Authority says the waterfront and historic downtown are steps from where passengers come ashore, and it has added a second berth.
  • Saint John, New Brunswick. On every Breakaway round trip. Port Saint John calls it the only city on the Bay of Fundy and says the bay has the highest tides on the planet.
  • Bar Harbor, Maine. Only the Regent and Windstar ships call here on this schedule. The Town of Bar Harbor runs a licensed landing facility for cruise passengers at Ells Pier, the Town Pier.
  • Quebec City, Quebec. The end of the Princess and Zuiderdam one-ways, and a day or a night on the Celebrity and 14-night Holland America trips. The Port of Québec says its Ross-Gaudreault terminal is near Old Québec and the Petit-Champlain district.
  • Saguenay, Quebec. On the Princess one-ways, Volendam's August trips and several of the small ships. The Port of Saguenay calls the Saguenay the only navigable fjord in North America.
  • Eastport, Maine. A regular on Breakaway and Volendam, and on no other ship here.

Are there cruises from Boston to Nova Scotia?

Yes, and every Canada and New England cruise from Boston on this schedule calls there. 97 sailings stop at Halifax and 58 at Sydney, counting the 2027 Bermuda trips that stop at Halifax on the way. None is shorter than 7 nights, so there is no 3-day cruise from Boston to Nova Scotia.

The shortest ones are Norwegian Breakaway's 7-night round trips, which leave on Sundays and pair Halifax with ports in Maine and New Brunswick. Jewel of the Seas' 7-night trips in the fall of 2028 add Sydney. Our short cruises guide compares them.

Can you cruise from Boston to Quebec City or Montreal?

Yes, one way. 14 sailings on this schedule end in Quebec City and 19 in Montreal, so you fly home from Canada. Holland America, Princess and Norwegian sail the Quebec City runs. The Montreal runs are mostly Volendam and the small luxury ships of Regent, Oceania, Seabourn, Azamara and Windstar.

If you would rather come back to Boston, Celebrity's 11- and 12-night round trips and Holland America's 14-night round trips call at Quebec City on the way. The section on getting home from Quebec City or Montreal covers flights and preclearance.

Why does every round trip from Boston call in Canada?

The likely reason is the coastwise law. The federal regulation that applies it says that for a ship not qualified for U.S. coastwise trade, such as a foreign-flag ship, a voyage solely to U.S. ports where a passenger goes ashore is a violation. Every round trip on this schedule calls at a Canadian port.

The same regulation counts any foreign port in North America as a nearby foreign port. On a voyage to U.S. ports and a nearby foreign port, the violation it lists is getting off at a U.S. port other than the one where you boarded. So a round trip has to end where it began. You cannot leave the cruise early in Portland or Bar Harbor, and there is no Maine-only cruise from Boston on this schedule.

Do you need a passport for a cruise from Boston to Canada?

For a round trip, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says U.S. citizens may come back with a government-issued photo ID and proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, because the cruise starts and ends at the same U.S. port. For a one-way trip you fly home from Canada, and CBP says that needs a passport.

CBP also warns that the countries a ship visits may still ask for a passport. The passport card will not do for the flight home, because CBP says it is not accepted for international air travel. Our cruise documents guide covers the details.

How do you get home from a one-way cruise to Quebec City or Montreal?

Plan on a flight, with a passport book. Montreal-Trudeau airport has U.S. preclearance, so you go through U.S. customs before you board and skip the CBP and TSA lines when you land. Quebec City is not on CBP's list of preclearance locations, so you clear customs when you land in the United States.

Arrival times vary by ship, according to the itineraries on sale. Volendam reaches Montreal at 7am, and Zuiderdam reaches Quebec City at 7am. Caribbean Princess and Breakaway's trip of 22 October 2028 arrive in Quebec City the day before and stay the night. For Princess voyages that stay overnight in Quebec City, Princess says the earliest flight on the second day is 8am and it prefers 10am. Other lines set their own advice.

A one-way also changes how you start the trip. You will not come back to the terminal, so leaving a car in cruise parking makes little sense. Plan on a drop-off, or see our guides to getting from Logan Airport to the cruise port and hotels near the port.

When do Canada and New England cruises leave Boston?

From June to October, and most leave in September and October. Volendam starts in June, and Norwegian Breakaway switches over from Bermuda in late August. September is the busiest month at the port, with 19 departures in September 2027 and 21 in September 2028.
